“We thank His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE ministers and foreign dignitaries for their support of Gulfood 2013, an event that has grown consistently over the last 26 years to become a significant driver of food and beverage trade for global markets. The presence of government ministers and top level trade delegations from around the world is also testament to this fact, as is the continued interest from both large and small F&B companies to participate in the show. It is clear that Gulfood delivers substantial business contracts and facilitates unrivalled trade opportunities for both regional and international businesses,” said Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General, Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) and CEO, Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), organiser of Gulfood.
Following the inauguration of the show, government ministers and heads of international trade delegations from over 14 countries conducted bilateral talks at the Ministers Meet.
Running until 28 February 2013, Gulfood 2013 welcomes more than 1,400 new exhibitors this year ensuring an unparalleled range of new products and technology solutions available to buyers from each sector of the food and hospitality spectrum.
Commenting on the presence of the first Ecuador pavilion at Gulfood, Hussam Hassan, Head of the Ecuadorian Commercial Office in Dubai said, “The UAE and the wider GCC are both important import and export markets for Ecuador. While imports from the UAE increased by an average of 188 per cent from 2009 to 2011, Ecuador’s exports to the UAE increased by approximately 87 per cent during the same period. Our role is to help Ecuadorian food companies expand into lucrative markets such as the UAE as well as to help UAE companies do business in Ecuador, and when it comes to the food and beverage sector, there is no better platform to do so than Gulfood.”
Leading companies and brands participating at Gulfood include Al Rawabi, Choithrams, Barry Callebaut, Bon Café, Delmonte, Dilmah, Electrolux, General Mills, Hershey’s, IPS,

How to wear Blue with Lush

Keep Calm…
Blue will suit you!
Blue is being hailed as the new black. Pastel, navy, teal, cobalt… the 80’s - an era defining this colour eye makeup - is making a comeback! It’s time to go true blue.
But dare you wear it? If the thought of this colour fills you with fear, Lush is hear to help.
Emotional Brilliance is a range of lip and eye colours based on positive colour therapy developed by LUSH Co Founder Rowena Bird and Harley Street Hypnotherapist Lady Helen Kennedy. Choose the colours that appeal to your subconscious and find out what this reveals about your state of mind. Each colour has a positive affirmation to help you feel the power of the word.
CALM liquid eyeliner (85aed) is a pastel, baby blue colour made with a base of soothing rose petal infusion and skin-softening almond and jojoba oils, ensuring the delicate skin around your eye will be truly looked after. There’s also glycerine to help carry the colour over the eye, should you wish to blend into an eyeshadow, and capuacu butter to help set the colour pigment nicely so it lasts and lasts.
How to wear:
  • Draw the eyeliner close to the lashes. Start at the inner corner of the eyelid and draw across. A fine line will give discreet colour and a thicker line will give boldness to the eye.

Syrian Pavilion at Global Village

Gourmet Tasting of Baqlawa and Dried Fruits

The Syrian Pavilion at Global Village, the region’s leading Cultural, Shopping and Entertainment family outdoor destination, receives its visitors with the typically warm welcome of the Syrians as they keep offering visitors their homegrown delicacies. The pavilion is designed in the foyer-style entrance with a water fountain to give the feel of the old homes of Damascus. Meanwhile, shops surround the foyer to sell their goods like in the well known Hamidia Bazaar in Damascus.

Syrian Furniture
Syria is famous for its walnut wood and shell works. From Fatimi style wood engraving to the gold leaves adaption of Andalucía. Antique or modern replicas, Sahara Eastern Works showcase the best of Syrian craftsmanship. One of the antique Arabic cupboards is 89 years old as the shell engraved date goes back to 1350 Hijri. The exhibitor assured that antique pieces attract both Arabs and non-Arab clients. Exhibiting for the fifth year at Global Village, many of the antique pieces have been sold over the years and for this season the smaller cupboard was sold to a client from Kuwait.

Damascus Delicacies
Exhibitors of Syrian Baqlawa, dried fruits and nuts with honey offer a wide range of homemade delicacies. Tasting is a mandate before buyers can make up their minds, says one exhibitor and it is part of the Syrian hospitality.

Syrian Cotton Wear
Famous for its cotton pajamas and T-shirts, stretches and gowns, bath robes and socks the collections come in printed whites and plain soft colors this season and cover children, men and women.

Folklore Fashion
The latest of the Syrian ladies fashion are expressed in the ladies Jilbab, and fashionable handmade pieces with copper coins, crochet works on the sides and embroidery on voile cotton. The exhibitor of Royal Hawdage has been exhibiting at Global Village since 2000, as his collections attract folk lovers especially from Arab nationalities.

Copper Works
Large, party size copper platters for Biryani or rice dishes, coffee holder, chandeliers, wall hung Arabic swords, paintings with copper color Arabic calligraphy as well as handmade colored tea glasses, are all showcased at the pavilion.

Syrian Table Covers
Embroidery on organza, silk or velvet, plain studded or with sequins, the range sparks many home decoration ideas.

Ice Cream
Before leaving the pavilion, the famous Damascus Ice Cream is worth a try. The beat-mix is purely made of mastic, fresh milk and cream and topped by pistachio. Or maybe go for the Balila – which is boiled chick peas with lemon dressing for a more winter-warm snack.

Dubai International Boat Show’s growth and international appeal reflects strength of UAE’s leisure marine market

Region’s leading marine event showcases 430 boats valued at over AED1 billion 30 world exclusive premiers and regional launches to be announced

The 21st edition of the Dubai International Boat Show, the region’s leading leisure marine event, today announced that 430 boats, including 19 luxurious superyachts, valued at more than AED1 billion, will be on show next week.
This year’s event will have an impressive 30 global and regional launches taking place, demonstrating the importance of Dubai as a global platform, and the growing strength of the regional marine sector. Industry leaders from around the world have selected the Dubai International Boat Show to showcase their exciting debuts, including Al Shaali Marine, Art Marine, Chris Craft, Delma Marine, Du Boats, Fountaine Pajot, Gulf Craft, IMG Boats, Safwa Marine, Riviera and Van Dutch among others.
The Dubai International Boat Show takes place March 5-9, 2013 at the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC), Mina Seyahi, with more than 750 companies and brands and tens of thousands of visitors and buyers expected to attend.
With the regional marine industry showing signs of growth, a strong international presence is reinforced by the participation of the largest number of countries in the history of the show. This year exhibitors from 49 countries with six debut appearances from Armenia, Belgium, Malaysia, Malta, Palau and the Russian Federation highlights the Dubai International Boat Show’s position as a focal point for the industry with boat manufacturers choosing Dubai to promote their yachts to reach local and global buyers.
H.E. Helal Saeed Almarri, CEO of Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) and Director General of the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) said: “The Dubai International Boat Show has secured its position as the region’s leading leisure marine event. This year’s impressive line-up of global and regional launches and the large increase in international participation, serves as a true barometer of the stability and strength of the regional maritime industry. As the catalyst for the Middle East leisure marine sector, the show stimulates greater demand and encourages foreign trade and investment, highlighting Dubai’s position as a global marine gateway.”
Ali Bin Ghulaita, CEO of Dubai International Marine Club, expressed his delight at welcoming the 21stedition of the Dubai International Boat Show to DIMC, commenting that the show continues to grow from strength to strength over the more than two decades since its unveiling.
The increased international presence this year is marked by Turkey’s return to the show with the largest participation - eight times larger than last year. The United States and Italy have increased their floor space by 110% and 47% respectively with the U.S. state of Florida also having a new dedicated pavilion due to strong demand from North America. The Dive Middle East segment of the show has seen a 35% expansion this year, with new international exhibitors travelling from Denmark, France, Germany and the USA to take advantage of the increasing marine leisure activity in the region.
Saeed Hareb, Senior Advisor, Dubai International Boat Show said: “The Dubai International Boat Show is the most important event in the maritime calendar in the Middle East. The show continues to attract the highest calibre of exhibitors and boating enthusiasts from around the world, as well as new visitors keen to become part of the leisure marine community, as Dubai further cements its position as an international marine hub. We are looking forward to celebrating the show’s 21st edition.”
According to a recent Boston Consulting Group report, the UAE - along with the other Gulf States of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar - is among the world’s top 10 countries with the highest density of ultra-wealthy households. The affluence of the Middle East region is highlighted by the fact that 60% of the world’s top 100 superyachts are owned by Middle East residents.
Erwin Bamps, Chief Operating Officer, Gulf Craft, said this large number of high net worth individuals is driving the demand for luxury marine crafts.
“Year-on-year we have witnessed an impressive growth in the Gulf’s marine industry with customers spanning across the globe, to include a significant number of local customers. Gulf Craft continues to see an increase in sales across our portfolio of luxury marine craft, with many of these orders being placed at or as a direct result of the Dubai International Boat Show,” Bamps added.
The UAE’s boat manufacturers have contributed an estimated 60-70% of the Gulf’s total population of leisure boats, with UAE owners utilising Dubai’s boat building, refurbishment and repair facilities, which are reported as being the among best in the GCC. To support this growth, the Dubai International Boat Show will feature a dedicated UAE Pavillion to host the country’s top up-and-coming boat builders.
The display area, which is being sponsored by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, showcases some of the country’s leisure craft manufacturers. H.E. Hamad Buamim, Director General, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: “As the region’s most lucrative platform for boat and yacht sales, Dubai International Boat Show is an important date on the emirate’s calendar. This year Dubai Chamber is delighted to be involved especially as the show is providing a platform for UAE businesses to showcase their expertise to a global audience. At present, over 1,360 of Dubai Chamber’s members work in the maritime industry, this is an important economic sector and one that has significant potential to grow. The show also helps to highlight Dubai as the gateway to the lucrative Middle East marine market.”
Among the top quality manufacturers of smaller leisure crafts in the country is Ocean Boats, which will be exhibiting its products at the Made in the UAE Pavilion. “The dedicated UAE Pavilion is certainly a great opportunity for smaller business concerns like mine to be able to showcase our expertise in producing first-class vessels for fun and leisure out on the water,” said Ocean Boats owner Ahmed Bin Ghulaita.
The Gulf Boating Conference, under the chairmanship of Dr. Mohammed Hamdan Al Shamsi, will focus on “The Evolving Middle East Boating Market” and will include discussions among the region’s top boat manufacturers, marina operators, marina authorities, marina construction companies and dealers. In addition, a programme of seminars and workshops will be held where experts will address the latest industry trends, technologies and regulations affecting the leisure marine sector.
Fun and entertainment are integral elements of the Dubai International Boat Show, and visitors to the show can be assured of a great day out with exciting activities for all. The popular Retail Village and Heritage Village return this year with spectacular live entertainment to be enjoyed throughout the show.
Other exciting highlights include visitor prize draws with the chance to win amazing prizes throughout the show, including a Yamaha WaveRunner, opening passes and accommodation to the Cannes Film Festival, Champions League passes, a Yas Marina F1 race package and much more!
With even easier access to this year’s Dubai International Boat Show, free Water Taxis are provided by the RTA from Skydive Dubai and Dubai Marina Mall and shuttle buses will provide transportation from Gateway Towers at the entrance of Palm Jumeirah. With these services, visitors can spend ample time enjoying the vast selection of yachts, boats, and the full range of marine equipment available at show.
The popular Supercar Promenade returns to the show for the third year and brings with it a range of limited edition models and the finest examples of engineering prowess available on four wheels. Bentley, Brabus, McLaren and Rolls Royce are some of the luxury motoring brands that will showcase their latest models.
The 21st Dubai International Boat Show will be held at the Dubai International Marine Club, Mina Seyahi from March 5-9, 2013 and will be open to trade visitors and the general public from 3pm – 9.30pm daily. Key sponsors of the event include luxury watch brand Officine Panerai, with Mercedes Benz as the official car for the show. The official footwear partner is Crocs and private jet manufacturer Bombardier joins the show as a major supporter for the third year. Abu Dhabi National Insurance Company (ADNIC), Gargash Enterprises, One&Only Royal Mirage and Vilebrequin are also among the prestigious partners this year.

Regional Research Market Worth $600m

Spotlight On MENAP’s Post-Arab Spring Insights From Consumer Perspective

Navigating Change For Growth Conference
March 4 - 5, 2013
Godolphin Ballroom, Jumeirah Emirates Towers, Dubai, UAE

Finn Raben, Director General of ESOMAR
Dubai UAE, February 2013: The region’s market research sector is at last finding itself in demand as marketers strive to discover what the consumer really, really wants in the post-Arab Spring era, according to Steve Hamilton-Clark, CEO of TNS MENA, the world’s largest custom market research organisation.

Hamilton-Clark said that the global market research sector is currently worth a whopping USD 33.5 billion with the Middle East and Africa, considered the smallest region globally, accounting for USD 600 million.

Speaking ahead of next month’s Dubai gathering of market research professionals, dubbed the ESOMAR BEST OF MENAP (Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan) 2013 conference, Hamilton-Clark said that the sector’s time has come citing the rise in research spend especially in the MENAP region of USD 293 million.

Under the tagline ‘Navigating Change for Growth,’ the two day meet is expected to attract more than 150 delegates from across the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan.

Echoing his sentiments, Finn Raben, Director General of ESOMAR, the world association for market, social and opinion researchers, said: “Market research brings the real story of people into the boardroom and public decision making; helping leaders in business and public life understand the consumer.”

Steve Hamilton Clark-CEO of TNS MENA
Regional and international market research, advertising and marketing experts will take the stage at the conference, organised by ESOMAR Live, to share regional business and market research issues, as well as learning and networking opportunities.

Eric Salama, Chairman and CEO of Kantar Group, will deliver the keynote address to be followed by expert panel discussions and presentations from guest speakers Lucy Davison of Keen as Mustard Marketing, UK and Jon Puleston, Vice President Innovation, GMI, UK.

“This year’s event also sees a dedicated session on ‘Communication Insights’, to enable marketers to create effective analysis and interpretations of data,” said Raben.

The event will throw a spotlight on trends and challenges of post Arab Spring communication in markets such as Egypt and Tunisia, and a session on Health Consciousness Levels – from a consumer perspective. Experts will ‘Decode the Real Taste of Arabia’ to understand local nuances, attributes, preferences and in depth segmentation of the Arab consumer.

Raben explained that “Returning to Dubai for the second consecutive year and hosting the ‘Best of’ conference allows for professionals to collaborate and benefit from advanced thinking and idea sharing that is present in today’s research industry.

“The Middle East has always been a commercial powerhouse in global terms and we see a demand from the market research community to be a regional ‘insight powerhouse’ and are thrilled to participate in this role and contribute towards the region’s positive development.”

Founded in 1948, ESOMAR aims to promote the value of market and opinion research in effective decision-making. Through its codes and guidelines, ESOMAR promotes the highest ethical and professional standards for researchers around the world.

“Teach a man how to fish and he will not stay hungry another day of his life! Similarly NLP empowers managers to become true leaders, armed with tools and resources to tap into the Fire within, the unending source of inspiration and opportunity…”  Carol Talbot

The world needs fearless leaders, according to Carol Talbot, considered the region's foremost NLP Master Trainer.

“Humanity is at a critical point and the world needs leaders with a willingness to take brave steps to make this world a sustainable positive place,” said Talbot, who is also a certified Master Fire-walk Instructor and published author.

Talbot suggests that true leadership no longer relies on new skills, but needs a new view of learning and the muscle to embrace big change.

Carol Talbot is a Dubai based Fire Starter,
Learning Consultant, NLP Expert, Keynote Speaker and now Author
“Organisations have an urgent need for people who are ready and able to face their fears with courage. And here is where Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) comes in,” she added.

According to her NLP is simply the user manual for the mind, offering the tools and strategies to make a conscious shift.

“Teach a man how to fish and he will not stay hungry another day of his life. Similarly NLP empowers managers to become true leaders, by giving them tools and resources to tap into the fire within, into an unending source of inspiration and opportunities,” Talbot added.

“New leaders in the new world are the individuals ready to break through their fears and limiting beliefs. The best financial, reasoning or planning skills will not enable the managers to evolve as leaders and build a sustainable corporate world; it’s the fire within which counts!”

Talbot shared that tomorrow’s leaders are those who have learnt to harness their internal resources, powers and capacity.

“To date, traditional business education has focused on the acquisition of knowledge, skills, how to apply these skills in business situations. This approach is clearly not working for today’s corporate world. The good news is that NLP enables managers to make very rapid shifts and changes that are permanent. NLP identifies patterns of success and how to re-create those patterns in all areas of life.

“This is a true breakthrough, a conscious shift to bring the answers from within you, instead of quick-fix solutions. And that is the starting point for changing the world for you. Once you have learnt to tap into this fire, your awareness will inspire your teams and organisations too,” concluded Talbot.

European Kiosks at Global Village Represent Authentic Sweet Holland

Global Village, the region’s leading Cultural, Shopping and Entertainment family outdoor destination, is hosting more than 160 kiosks, with many representing authentic products, serving fresh snacks and delicacies representing their respective country’s tradition or concept. Featured in the European street are a number of medium sized kiosks. The natural timber designs, replicate the eco-friendly look and feel of the Netherlands and serve a variety of the most traditional Dutch desserts, delicacies and sweets.

Golden Syrup Cookies
Known for the long tradition of preparing the most delicious recipes of cookies, most of the kiosks serve freshly baked specialties. One of the kiosks sells an assortment of Dutch and European candies, toffees and fruit gums.
At the Golden Syrup Cookies kiosk, Michael, is specialized in preparing the secret recipe. “One hour or so before opening the park, we start preparing the dough. Then we start baking some of the cookies and pack them for the customers who prefer to take away. For those who prefer to have it freshly baked, then we do it on the spot so people can enjoy some fresh warm Dutch cookies. Cookies come in three traditional fillings, cheese, Nutella and Jersey toffees”. Said, Michael.
Holland Sugar Waffles and Mini Pancakes

Traditional mini pancakes and waffles are part of Holland’s culture and the energy booster in the country’s cold weather. According to Tomek, the specialist in charge, it’s not just the recipe, it’s also the concept. “In the Netherlands the concept of our mini pancakes revolves around sharing. In one order, a whole family can share and enjoy the delicacy”.
Most of the ingredients are shipped from Holland to Global Village, so visitors of the park can get to taste the real freshly baked waffles and pancakes. “It needs to be eaten warm especially in this cool evening weather. We have many loyal customers who come from different nationalities, thanks to Dubai’s multi-cultural mix and this entertainment and shopping park which attracts visitors from across the region. I love the atmosphere here and I hope to come back next season so I can once again prepare our waffles with their 500 year-old Dutch heritage”.
Dressings vary from Nutella, white chocolate, cheese, toffee, cinnamon to maple syrup.
European Coconut Cookies
Not far away is pastry maker Florentino, whose specialty is the coconut cookies and waffles offering passersby the same sweet feel of Dutch tradition. “Most of my customers are Arabs, maybe because they love the taste of coconut, and they don’t mind trying the waffles I prepare here. Every day, I prepare the dough, place in tray and bake it in front of customers so they can enjoy watching while it’s in the baking and crisp”. Said Florentino.
Holland Candy Store
Sunk deep in colorful candy wraps, the store has the best of the rare to find sweets and Jersey Toffees. Dave, the Dutch national who has travelled 6,000 miles away from home for the first time, to showcase at Global Village, assure that most of his candies are a mix of Dutch and European.
From lollypops to mastic, rose flavored bonbons to popular Dutch fruit gums, the kiosk is the right stop for sweet savvies. “I’m happy to showcase at this lively tourist attraction, since it is the first time for me outside Holland, I got to learn a great deal about the culture of Muslims and Arabs, and my perception has totally changed”, said Dave.
Amid the packs of sweets, a small collection of Delfts Blauw is on display with souvenirs of the windmill jars and “Klompen” (Dutch clogs) key chains.
Global Village is very proud to be hosting these kiosks that represent the true taste of the Netherlands and bring a uniquely Dutch flavour to the festival.
