@Nicecareuae After 150 years, Dubai’s 21st century anesthesia conquers ‘the biggest fear’

A dental expert separates facts from myths, explaining how dentistry has gone from a ‘nightmare’ to a dream come true…

When asked what their biggest fear is, many people consider a dental visit to be on the same level as the fear of flying, snakes or even death itself. In fact one woman described how she gets more nervous in her dentist’s office than she was in her maternity ward during childbirth. This instinctive anxiety is worsened by ‘triggers’ like the sound of a dentist’s drill. The irony is that the more you avoid a dentist, the more you need one – since any untreated dental conditions may deteriorate with every meal without regular check-ups.

During my almost two decades experience, I have learned that as dentists we must focus not only on the medical aspects but also the psychological side to reassure patients. The more relaxed a patient, the easier the dentist’s job. But this becomes a dozen times harder when the patient is a child.

After looking deeper into what scares patients so much, the biggest culprit seems to be the dental syringe. Ironically patients associate the syringe with pain, despite the fact that it is meant to numb the gums from pain. Yes, painless injections are achievable at times, but it’s simply unrealistic to expect a conventional dental syringe to painlessly deliver local anesthesia to all locations. It’s remarkable that in such a fast-evolving field, the syringe has barely changed at all since its invention 150 years ago.

Fortunately, a 21st century innovation that I first used with patients at Dubai’s NICE CARE Medical Center, has been a total game-changer: the STA (single tooth anesthesia) system. This consists of a smart microprocessor, connected to a pen-like ‘wand’ which the dentist holds to aim the anesthesia onto the desired target within the mouth.
YouTube is flooded with humorous videos of patients who have just visited the dentist and are totally numb in their lips, tongue and cheeks, leading to hilariously slurred speech. But with this sophisticated STA system, you’ll go home with normal speech, showing off your dazzling new smile.

The fear of a syringe is universal – for instance it’s the biggest reason why many people avoid donating blood, even though they know it saves lives. Although many patients believe the pain comes from inserting the needle, this is a myth: most of the pain actually comes from the flow of the anesthetic. Fortunately this new innovation automatically compensates for different tissue densities, meaning the anesthetic is delivered at a constant pressure and the injection is hardly felt at all. Often when my patients ask when the injection is coming, you should see their smiles when I tell them I have already injected them!

The solution spreads in all directions at once and if the needle is close to the target, more anesthetic will reach the nerve instead of surrounding tissues. This reduces the need for multiple injections, significantly saving time and comfort.

Gone are the days when you’d hear horror stories of patients being injected six or more times, emerging with their whole mouth, throat and half their face numb for an eternity afterwards!

Not to mention that we as dentists will look much less intimidating holding a pen-like device as opposed to holding a syringe. I’m thrilled because this innovation will change the perception of dentists. No more will we be the worst nightmare of many adults, and a threat used to frighten naughty children.

Art exhibition by renowned artist Aleksandr Filippov to inspire and delight the culturally refined at the Anantara Residences

Renowned Russian artist Aleksandr Filippov, along with Art Media will unveil his latest creative works, no doubt to the delight of art lovers, at Anantara Residences, South Residence, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, from the 5th-11th March.

Art Media, who are organising the event with Anantara Residences, will be displaying 23 original pieces from the artist. Filippov, who has been exhibiting his work since 1994, and has continued to do so for over 20 years, will be displaying his art for the first time in Dubai in Marc

h, with a collection of artwork inspired by his travels and memories of his childhood.

‘Hosting the exhibition is incredibly exciting for us, Filippov is such a fantastic artist it is a real pleasure to exhibit his work, it really is inspirational’ said Abdulla Bin Sulayem, CEO Seven Tides, developer of the Anantara Residences. ‘This is a great opportunity for art lovers to see such a talented artist’s work, and we are really thrilled to be unveiling 23 original pieces of art for the first time.’

Filippov, was born in Guryevsk City, Russia in 1958 and was inspired to become an artist by his father. Encouraged to draw from an early age, the majority of his work features water scenes from the various city’s he’s lived in. He moved to Odessa City in 1975, which features in his latest work. After graduating from Kursk State Education College with an art and graphics major it was only a few years (1994) until Filippov was offered the chance to hold a solo exhibition. This number quickly grew to 20 exhibitions within 18 years.

Generally, critics have described Filippov’s works as ‘lyricism’, an esthetical way of discovering the world, where the art captures an emotion or experience.  The artist himself says that his work is full of positive energy and that with a need for beauty in the world, painting is a great way to immortalise the beautiful.

Pieces such as ‘On The Sea Side, Odessa’ and ‘Old Pier, Odessa’ are clearly paying homage to the artists home country of Russia. ‘There is nothing more important and more pleasant for the real artist than a blank canvas on the easel, the small of fresh colours and the first brush stroke’ said Filippov.

With all of his artwork for sale, Filippov believes that art should be accessible and therefore affordable, with prices of his creations starting from AED950. The show, which starts Wednesday 6th March and lasts until the 11tth will be opening its doors from 9am -5pmat the Anantara Residences on the Palm Jumeirah. – can we rephrase this, as we are doing the invite-only preview event on 5th March for selected guests and the art pieces will be  displayed for public viewing from 6-11th March 2014 from 9 am – 5 pm

Filippov isn’t the only artist who will be displaying unique pieces, Anantara Residences in collaboration with Art Media aim to showcase more unique pieces of three or four more renowned artists within this year.

Out of a record 40 teams, Dubai National School (Al Barsha) Boys U12, Lycee Francais International George Pompidou Boys U15 and in an incredible feat St. Mary’s Catholic School in both the Girls U13 and Girls U16 took home the gold and their tickets to England, after winning the Cup finals yesterday, and will be traveling to Old Trafford next month courtesy of DSFC Main Sponsor Chevrolet, to watch Manchester United in a Premier League match and attend a football clinic conducted by Manchester United coaches courtesy of DSFC Main Sponsor Emirates NBD.

During the awards ceremony, DSFC Director, Michel Salgado said: “We’ve seen some terrific raw talent and some excellent skills at Dubai Schools Football Cup over the past eight weeks. There are definitely a few leaders among the children we’ve watched. Above all, we have enjoyed watching children learning and practicing healthy competition. Football is so much more than the game, a ball, and a set of rules. It is a training ground for life and was wonderful to see so many people enjoy it.”

Winning teams were overwhelmed with emotion as they made their way to the stage to receive the Cup, medals and prizes. “We came here to play the game we love. We managed to get through and come in first place in a challenging final match against Sabis – Choueifat. Winning today has been amazing and DSFC is one of the best tournaments we have ever participated in and we look forward to next year,” said Majerus from Lycee International George Pompidou after their 2-0 win against Sabis – Choueifat  in the Boys U15 final.

The boys U12 final was a nail biter with the penalty shoot out being the final deciding factor. “We won!!! I can’t believe it! We’re going to England to see my favorite team. Manchester United, here we come! Thanks so much to the organizers and to Chevrolet and Emirates NBD . We were up against strong competition but this is really amazing,” said Abdullah from Dubai National School (Al Barsha) after his team beat Al Shafie 3-2 (2-2) in the Boys U12 final.

Not to be outdone, the girls’ teams played to a packed stadium of supporters, during the finals. In the Girls U16, St. Mary’s Catholic School snuck past top scorers Lycee Francais International George Pompidou with a 3-1 win in an unexpected victory. Team captain Chantel said after the match. “It’s been a wonderful experience, none of us expected to win and it will be amazing when we go to school and tell everyone we won. Our team played so well together and we trained hard, week after week to improve our skills, build our stamina and stay at the top of our game.”

Hussein Murad, Dubai Schools Football Cup President and CEO of Inspiratus said, “The DSFC has far exceeded our expectations. We set out to bring the Dubai youth community together and help nurture in them qualities that are key to their development, namely leadership, humility, collaboration and adaptability. What we did not expect is that the DSFC has become the new home of Dubai’s youth football enthusiasts! We thank the Dubai Sports Council for their partnership and our sponsors Chevrolet and Emirates NBD for making the youth’s dream come true.”

In its inaugural year, the Dubai Schools Football Cup has set the bar high for youth sports in Dubai and the planning committee is already marking out next year’s calendar, so schools, be ready. DSFC 2015 is right around the corner.

Thousands Visited Qasr al Hosn Festival to Celebrate Emirati Heritage and the Capital’s Symbolic Birthplace

Annual cultural festival attracted tens of thousands of visitors during 10 days of heritage-themed public programme and an international performance

Qasr al Hosn Festival has been hailed a huge success after tens of thousands of visitors attended the annual celebration of the ancient fort and more than 250 years of Emirati tradition, organised by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority.
Held under the patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the 10-day Qasr al Hosn Festival, in honour of Abu Dhabi’s most symbolic historic building, attracted Emiratis, expatriates and tourists of all ages.
His Excellency Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, said: “This year’s Qasr al Hosn Festival has been a huge success, bringing in people of all nationalities and from all walks of life to celebrate this fort, the symbolic birthplace of Abu Dhabi.” HE Sheikh Sultan added, “Qasr al Hosn Festival is an annual opportunity to highlight the importance of the Fort and its place at the heart of Abu Dhabi’s proud history, and to demonstrate the significant conservation and restoration process undertaken on the fort and its surroundings. We hope the success of this year’s programme sets a precedent for many more years to come.”
Every day, hundreds of visitors took guided tours inside the historic fort, their first opportunity in many years to see first-hand the important restoration work going on and learn more about the unique role Qasr al Hosn has played in the evolution of the emirate. It was also the first chance in several years for people to explore the Cultural Foundation, which offered a wide array of handicraft workshops, and recreated symbolic moments and memories of Abu Dhabi life and particularly of the Cultural Foundation, such as poetry evenings and a library experience.
Throughout the 10 days, the lively festival site, this year divided into four distinct areas – Marine, Oasis, Desert and Abu Dhabi Island – was swarming with families enjoying cultural demonstrations, educational workshops, storytelling and heritage-themed activities.
A team of young “Ambassadors” – specially trained Emirati students from across the UAE – were stationed throughout the festival, making people’s visits even more enjoyable by providing additional guidance and information.
One of the most popular attractions at this year’s event was the unique Gahwa (coffee in Arabic) experience located at the Cultural Foundation, a contemporary take on the Emirati coffee tradition where guests were able to learn about the Gahwa’s history and ritual, and taste or buy various types of the traditional Emirati Gahwa.
Fatema Dudaeva, 36, a Chechnyan expat, said she had visited the festival every day and particularly enjoyed the Gahwa, as well as demonstrations of traditional Emirati dances. She had also learned new culinary skills in a traditional cookery workshop.
“I come every day, and every day I find something new and exciting that I didn’t see before,” she said. “I love all the heritage on show here, and my favourite was the Gahwa coffee and the native dancing.
“I also really loved learning to do Henna, and I took part in a cooking workshop. This festival is wonderful because it is keeping traditions alive. It’s so important that people stay in touch with their past. I think it helps people appreciate what they have more.”
Other hits with visitors, according to feedback gathered at the festival, were toy making workshops for children in the Cultural Foundation, and demonstrations of fishnet making in the marine zone.
The Qasr al Hosn Exhibition, which took visitors on an educational journey through the fort’s history, was also a favourite for many people. The exhibition will continue to open its doors for visitors after the festival.
Hamad Al Mansoori, Emirati, 17, who works at the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi, spent two days exploring the festival’s varied attractions. He said: “The atmosphere of the festival is amazing – the sights, the sounds, everything. I’ve learned so much about the past from coming here. The festival is about how Emirati people used to live their lives – I was standing earlier with an old man who was showing me the traditional way they used to make rope. It’s very important, particularly for the young generation, to be reminded of their heritage. The late Sheikh Zayed taught us that if you don’t have a past, you don’t have a future.”
Hana Al Menhali, Emirati, 35, was enjoying seeking out authentic Emirati goods in the traditional souk area. “The souk is excellent and sells real, good quality Emirati stuff – I have bought spices and perfumes,” she said. “The festival is very exciting for the UAE people and for the visitors because it teaches so much about our traditions.
One of the highlights of this year’s festivities was the spectacular Cavalia at Qasr al Hosn, a sell-out show which dazzled audiences with its stunning mix of acrobatics and equestrian performance. Beautifully adapted for the Qasr al Hosn Festival audience, the mesmerizing show told the story of man’s age-old bond with horses.

@TrendMicro Trend Micro Delivers Comprehensive Defense with HP Against Targeted Attacks

Combination of solutions empowers enterprises to quickly detect, report and block data breaches

As high-profile targeted attacks expand and evolve, enterprises must guard against complex, often invisible threats. Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704), a global security software leader, today announced its collaboration with HP to combat advanced threats. The combination of Trend Micro™ Deep Discovery, a critical capability of Trend Micro’s Smart Protection Platform that goes beyond the limitations of standard defenses to detect and analyze attacks in real-time, with HP TippingPoint, a market-leading solution that actively prevents network intrusion and contains threats – will help enterprises achieve a new level of defense against advanced threats. To further prevent attacks, Deep Discovery reports incidents to HP ArcSight, HP’s market-leading security information and event management (SIEM) solution, for in-depth correlation and analysis, and will also share threat data with HP’s Threat Central platform.
“We have heard loud and clear from CIOs that targeted attacks and advanced threats are a primary concern, and defending against them must be part of a broader strategy of detection and prevention that integrates existing network defenses,” said Partha Panda, vice president of global channels and alliances, Trend Micro. “Working with one of the most respected names in technology and security is truly invigorating and validates Trend Micro’s efforts to develop comprehensive solutions that contain targeted attacks before they can damage networks and compromise sensitive data while allowing customers to take full advantage of their existing investments on security products and technologies.”
Trend Micro™ Deep Discovery proactively detects targeted attacks and advanced threats, identifies threat characteristics and communicates actionable intelligence to HP TippingPoint for immediate blocking. Deep Discovery also reports incidents to HP ArcSight to allow deeper investigation and data sharing with HP’s Threat Central platform.
“Cyber criminals are going well beyond traditional malware and conventional attack vectors, and enterprises need protection that keeps pace and adapts faster than the adversaries,” said Rob Greer, vice president and general manager, TippingPoint, Enterprise Security Products, HP. “Collaborating with pioneering security software companies like Trend Micro supports our mission to deliver the most comprehensive solutions on the market to block and remediate advanced threats.”
Deep Discovery’s custom sandboxing technology offers HP ArcSight and HP TippingPoint customers tailored detection against specific environments to pinpoint evasive threats in real-time. Enterprises can also leverage the global threat intelligence of Trend Micro’s Smart Protection Network™ and HP’s Threat Central platform in order to securely share threat intelligence data.
Unlike competitors’ piecemeal technology, this offering is the first of its kind, uniting network intrusion prevention, next generation firewall, sandboxing and SIEM elements to provide complete defense against targeted attacks and advanced threats. Customers will have greater peace of mind with improved protection from sophisticated attacks, now and in the future. For easy management, network intrusion prevention can be activated from a single console to keep desktops, laptops and mobile devices safe – which is ideal as BYOD and consumerization continue to proliferate.

Spring Makeup Trends 2014 from Pond’s Arabia

Nilo Haq, Make up Artist & Brand Ambassador for Pond’s Arabia Gives her tips

Spring is a great way to bring new colors into your makeup wardrobe.  This spring brings together some bright, bold and fun trends.  From orange lips, bushy eyebrows and white eyeliner there is something different for everyone to try!

Trend #1: Bright Orange Lips

Orange lips have been a popular color during the warm weather for quite some time.  Take this trend up a notch by going bolder and brighter than ever!  It’s a great pop of color for the spring/summer as compared to the usual red lip.

Trend #2: Glowing Skin

This spring bring on the glow!  Everyone loves healthy, glowing skin.  Try the trend by mixing a bit of Pond’s Gold Radiance Day Cream into your foundation for a natural yet glowing complexion.  For added shine, apply a powder highlighter on the cheekbones.  You’ll be getting compliments all day!

Trend #3:  Pops of Blue

Make your eyes a notable statement with bright blue eye shadow on the eyelids.  Play with the trend to suit your personality by even placing pops of blue shadow under the eye or even bold blue liquid eyeliner paired with heavy mascara.

Trend #4: White Eyeliner

White was a happening color this past winter and continues into spring 2014.  Dare to wear something different by adding some white to your makeup!  Try replacing your usual black eyeliner with white!  It’s a fun way to change up your look without being too drastic.  Complete your look by pairing it with a hot pink lip color!

Trend #5: Bushy Brows

Overly shaped and even arched eyebrows are a trend of the past.  This season it’s all about bushy brows.  Bushy brows may not be for everyone, so instead change up the shape of your brow by keeping them square.
Trend #6: Orchid

Radiant orchid is the color of the year for 2014!  You’ll be seeing it from clothes to bags to coats. Adding orchid into your makeup bag is a must!  Try the trend by applying some orchid eye shadow to your eyelids or a beautiful orchid shaded gloss.  You will love it!

HH Sheikha Jawaher visits UAE Red Crescent @uaerc1 camp in Jordan, as UN makes biggest ever appeal for US$6.5 billion

By the end of 2014, homeless Syrians will outnumber the few who still have a roof over their heads

In the latest sad milestone for Syria, the United Nations has appealed for US$6.5 billion -- the biggest amount in history ever requested for a single humanitarian disaster. This comes as Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, UNHCR Eminent Advocate, visited a UAE Red Crescent camp in Jordan to explore collaborations that would reach the highest possible number of desperate refugees.

Her Highness went further to tour the refugee school and playground, and had heart-to-heart conversations with the children to hear their deepest needs, hopes and fears. Meanwhile more women humanitarians have been inspired to visit Jordan, with the Red Crescent welcoming a delegation of UAE women police officers led by Major Amina Al Balushi, who will help to upgrade the medical services.

Speaking to Red Crescent representatives, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher said: “There is no such thing as ‘too many aid organizations’, because Syrian refugees need all the help they can get. Having visited refugees in different camps, I am proud to say the UAE Red Crescent’s campaign -- ‘Our Hearts Are With The Syrian People’ -- is doing great work in serving the refugee families in need. I wish to see the camp expand and provide refuge to even more refugee families, which is what the Red Crescent team in Jordan is aiming to do. Thanks to our very supportive UAE leadership, we are showing the world that now is not the time for donor fatigue, but for whole-hearted sacrifice. Red Crescent officials have assured me that they will continue to expand their work for greater impact and will collaborate with other international organisations, specially UNHCR, to reach refugees in other camps and help in providing shelter for families and educational facilities for refugee children outside the Red Crescent camp. I have full faith in the abilities of Red Crescent to take on this great task and believe that they will lead the path in collaborating with other organisations working in Jordan to increase the impact of humanitarian aid on the Syrian refugee population.”

A living example of this selfless sacrifice is Dr Saif Al Kaabi, an Emirati who has volunteered for the Red Crescent’s missions in Jordan, Yemen and Pakistan. He explained why: “I left behind my comfortable life and job in Abu Dhabi because these suffering refugees need me more. This is not something you do for your CV; it’s something you do for your heart, and for your fellow humankind.”

Like the Big Heart Campaign, the UAE Red Crescent was instrumental in saving countless refugees from the freezing winter, raising over AED120 million from telethons and other fundraisers. Led by its Chairman, Dr Hamdan Musalam Al Mazrouei, the organization has sent 18 consignments from Abu Dhabi to Jordan and Lebanon; including over 3,000 tons of food, shelter and medical supplies for the UAE-Jordan Camp at Mreejab Al Fohood and Zaatari Refugee Camp.

Meanwhile the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres has warned that by the end of the year, internally displaced and refugee Syrians will outnumber the few Syrians who are lucky enough to still have a home.

Donors are urgently requested to send funds through ‘Salam Ya Seghar’, endorsed by HH Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi (Wife of His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah and UNHCR Eminent Advocate).
