@Worldwatch Asia and Africa Home to 95 Percent of Global Agricultural Population

New Worldwatch Institute study examines the slow growth of global agricultural populations and the vast disparity between continents

The global agricultural population----defined as individuals dependent on agriculture, hunting, fishing, and forestry for their livelihood----accounted for over 37 percent of the world's population in 2011, the most recent year for which data are available. This is a decrease of 12 percent from 1980, when the world's agricultural and nonagricultural populations were roughly the same size. Although the agricultural population shrunk as a share of total population between 1980 and 2011, it grew numerically from 2.2 billion to 2.6 billion people during this period, writes Worldwatch Senior Fellow Sophie Wenzlau in the Institute's latest Vital Signs Online trend (www.worldwatch.org).

Between 1980 and 2011, the nonagricultural population grew by a staggering 94 percent, from 2.2 billion to 4.4 billion people----a rate approximately five times greater than that of agricultural population growth. In both cases, growth was driven by the massive increase in the world's total population, which more than doubled between 1961 and 2011, from 3.1 billion to 7 billion people.

It should be noted that the distinction between these population groups is not the same as the rural-urban divide. Rural populations are not exclusively agricultural, nor are urban populations exclusively nonagricultural. The rural population of Africa in 2011 was 622.8 million, for instance, while the agricultural population was 520.3 million.

Although the agricultural population grew worldwide between 1980 and 2011, growth was restricted to Africa, Asia, and Oceania. During this period, this population group declined in North, Central, and South America, in the Caribbean, and in Europe.

In 2011, Africa and Asia accounted for about 95 percent of the world's agricultural population. In contrast, the agricultural population in the Americas accounted for a little less than 4 percent. Especially in the United States, this is the result of the development and use of new and innovative technologies, as well as the greater use of farm machinery, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation systems that require less manual labor.

Population trends have varied widely for the world's leading agricultural producers: China, India, and the United States. Between 1980 and 2011, the economically active agricultural populations of China and India grew by 33 and 50 percent, respectively, due to overall population growth. The economically active agricultural population of the United States, on the other hand, declined by 37 percent as a result of large-scale mechanization, improved crop varieties, fertilizers, pesticides, and federal subsidies----all of which contributed to economies of scale and consolidation in U.S. agriculture.

Although the world's agricultural population grew only marginally in recent decades, global agricultural output increased dramatically. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), global net agricultural production increased by 112 percent between 1980 and 2011. The world's net per capita production of agricultural goods increased by 35 percent during this period, averting food security crises in many places.

Although productivity gains have enabled farmers to meet the growing demand for food, the methods used to achieve such gains have come with unintended consequences, including soil degradation, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and depleted freshwater supplies. Short-term production gains achieved by overusing chemical pesticides and fertilizers have, as a result, reduced the sector's long-term resilience to climate change.

The FAO estimates that the global agricultural population will decline by 0.7 percent and that the nonagricultural population will grow by 16 percent between 2011 and 2020. The organization also estimates that feeding a population projected to reach 9.1 billion in 2050 will require raising overall food production by some 70 percent between 2005/07 and 2050.

"To address this challenge while promoting resilience to climate change and avoiding environmental degradation, farmers, governments, and the private sector could consider investing in agroecological approaches to farming----such as integrated pest management, no-till farming, cover cropping, and agroforestry," said Sophie Wenzlau, the trend's author. "Policies encouraging the conversion of land from biofuels and livestock feed production to food production could also play a role in sustainably increasing the human food supply."

Further highlights from the report:
  • Between 1980 and 2011, Africa's agricultural population grew by 63 percent, and its nonagricultural population grew by 221 percent.
  • Oceania's agricultural population grew by 49 percent, and its nonagricultural population grew by 65 percent.
  • Asia's agricultural population grew by 20 percent, and its nonagricultural population grew by 134 percent.
  • The combination of movement to cities and agricultural consolidation caused agricultural populations to decline in Europe and the Americas between 1980 and 2011: by 66 percent in Europe, 45 percent in North America, 35 percent in South America, 13 percent in Central America, and 7 percent in the Caribbean.

Vulnerable Syrian women in Zaatri find a sympathetic listener in HH Sheikha Jawaher

76% of Syrian refugees are women and children, as Big Heart Campaign listens to their education dreams

In her latest humanitarian trip to Jordan, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi -- UNHCR Eminent Advocate and Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah -- has met women and children from the refugee camps of Zaatri to provide a sympathetic ear and hear first-hand what their biggest needs are. The consultations gathered feedback on how the refugees’ living conditions can be improved through better shelters, sanitation and medical access. Education took center stage, as Her Highness was particularly keen to find out how many more schools, teachers and books are needed.

The visit comes soon after the launch of the Education phase of the Big Heart Campaign, as the focus shifts from short-term humanitarian needs like food to long-term needs like education and empowerment.

Speaking just after meeting refugee students, mothers and teachers at a school in Zaatri, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher explained the importance of the trip: “The most important thing is not what we tell refugees, but what they tell us. Nobody understands the crisis better than them because to them it’s not just a news headline or statistic, it’s their everyday life. I had a heart-to-heart talk about the women’s hopes and fears, and I asked the children about their career dreams. But I have realized that it’s impossible for children to concentrate in school if they are hungry, ill, cold or traumatized. So by improving their home life we will also improve their school life. I have been greatly touched by the brave women I have met, who sacrifice everything because they want their children to be judged not by their refugee status, but by their achievements in life.”

The efforts of Her Highness and the UNHCR have helped to bring several diplomats and leaders on visits to Syrian refugee camps across the region. 9.5 million Syrians have fled their homes and 2.5 million of these have been registered as refugees by the UNHCR across the region. Tragically, over 150,000 have lost their lives since March 2011, and the death toll is set to rise following renewed air strikes.

Donors are urgently requested to send funds through ‘Salam Ya Seghar’, endorsed by HH Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi (Wife of His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah and UNHCR Eminent Advocate).

Trend Micro Evolves Mobile Security Solutions, Elevating Capabilities for Combating Cyber Threats and Data Loss for Businesses, Consumers

Company’s CEO unveils comprehensive mobile security offerings at Mobile World Congress

At the Mobile World Congress today, Internet security pioneer Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704) revealed a set of solutions to combat the unprecedented array of cyber-attacks that are continually victimizing individuals and enterprises via mobile platforms. The new solutions will help mitigate threats to mobile networks and devices, including product enhancements to support enterprises and consumers alike.
At Mobile World Congress 2014 (Hall 6 – Booth 6L61), Trend Micro CEO and co-founder Eva Chen along with other Trend Micro experts will share the company’s vision for mobile security, as well as launch three new solutions that span enterprise and consumer markets.
These innovative solutions are designed to defend against fast-evolving, sophisticated threats to provide IT administrators with greater control over corporate devices and offer consumers an enhanced user experience. The solutions include:
  • Safe Mobile WorkForce provides secure mobile access to corporate data from mobile devices and an improved user experience, while providing the mobile user data through a remote operating system delivered to their mobile device.
  • Trend Micro Mobile Security is a multi-platform security solution to secure users’ data and privacy on Google Android, Apple iOS and Amazon Kindle devices. The solution provides first-rate secure web browsing, privacy guidance for Facebook settings, threat protection and lost device protection, data backup and parental controls.
  • Mobile App Reputation is the world’s first mobile app evaluation service that identifies new and existing malware verifies the reputations of mobile applications and provides threat defense during downloads. The Mobile App Reputation scans, blocks and identifies millions of hazardous apps from a variety of global online sources and has played a pivotal role in detecting and thwarting malicious apps’ damage at the BlackBerry app store, BlackBerry World.
“Mobile threats continue to grow in intensity and sophistication, and Trend Micro is committed to utilizing our proven expertise to address these challenges,” said Chen. “In 2014, mobile will become the attack vector of choice for cyber criminals, as the number of Android threats alone is expected to climb to more than 3 million. As cloud-based applications and BYOD policies become mainstream, both employees’ and companies’ sensitive data are at risk. Our comprehensive solutions will keep this information safe without impeding the mobile experience.”
Trend Micro is at the forefront of mobile threat research, identifying where attacks will come from and how users can best defend themselves. In Trend Micro’s 2013 Mobile Threat Report, threat researchers reported that mobile threats are moving beyond apps and Android’s vulnerabilities and are inconsistent with industry standards, developing a less secure mobile ecosystem. In 2013, TrendLabs researchers predicted that malicious and high-risk Android malware would exceed 1 million by the year’s end – a figure that took PC malware a decade to reach. Now, TrendLabs predicts that figure will reach 3 million in 2014.
The effectiveness of Trend Micro solutions are reinforced through its partnership with BlackBerry®. Trend Micro further identifies and blocks repackaged Android apps before they are sold on the BlackBerry® World™ storefront. The Trend Micro Mobile App Reputation service identifies and flags potential threats as either “malicious” or “high-risk” to prevent harm to devices and networks.
“Keeping our customers protected from security concerns, such as malware, remains a top priority at BlackBerry,” said Scott Totzke, senior vice president for Security at BlackBerry. “By leveraging Trend Micro’s app scanning capabilities with our comprehensive app vetting program, BlackBerry Guardian, we are providing customers with another layer of protection to help ensure that applications within our store are as safe as possible.”

@property_finder @PFUAE Price more important than location as cost of renting soars, survey reveals

The old adage about the three most important factors when choosing a property being ‘location, location and location’ might just not be true anymore. According to a recent nationwide survey by propertyfinder.ae, the country’s leading real estate portal, rental price emerged as the most important criterion amongst prospective tenants. Asking respondents to select the three most important criteria for choosing a new home, the survey pinpointed price, location and facilities as key factors in home choice.
The survey underlines growing concerns regarding spiralling rents. Given that leasing prices have shot up across the UAE even in cities such as Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman and Fujairah, earlier known for their relatively lower rentals, it is not surprising that renters are becoming budget-conscious. “However, this is not to say that other factors are irrelevant,” said Michael Lahyani, CEO and Founder of propertyfinder.ae. “There were other features which also rated highly in our survey, such as, location and amenities. Access to on-site community facilities is likely to become increasingly important to renters as they look for ways to enjoy downtime without breaking the bank,” added Lahyani.

Given that preferences change over time, surveys such as these help landlords stay on top of what renters are looking for in order to be able to market and manage their properties most effectively. “Price seems to have the biggest impact on a renter’s decision to choose one apartment/villa over another. Investors and buy-to-let landlords can draw upon this information if they’re looking to increase their portfolio or rent from existing properties. Given that close to 28,000 units are expected to enter the market this year, with Dubailand accounting for most of the future supply, this also means that as an owner, pricing your property appropriately will give you a competitive edge rather than upgrading your apartment with the latest bath or flooring,” said Lahyani.
