The modern Gladiator Sandal has been a
continued fashion success for a while now, especially perfect for delightful
evenings in the UAE. Now, the traditional craftsmanship secrets of Turkey’s
‘sandal master’ Ali Güven have been passed down to Turkish designer, Husna
Bulbuloglu. Ali Güven’s most famous collection of leather sandals were featured
in the 2004 blockbuster hit movie, ‘Troy’. To leak a secret or two... every
stitch and cut is carried out by hand, making each pair truly one of a kind.
The organic calf leather is processed using tannic acid extracted from the bark
of the vallonea oak tree. The result is leather that does not retain any smell,
never causes the feet to sweat and protects them from fungal infections. All
this in addition to lasting a lifetime!

Ali Güven believed in treating his
sandals with artistic respect, making each pair a piece of art. Celebrities
such as Mick Jagger, Bette Midler and Sting have all ordered customised pairs,
as well as Donna Karan and Lakis Gavalas both used his designs. The Princess of
Dubai, Latifah Abdrahman, was also a valued customer! So, it is with joy that
Husna continues the great work of a great designer and artist.
Husna graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree
from Bilkent University in Turkey before completing her Master’s Degree in the
United States. After a career spanning more than a decade in construction, she
listened to her inner voice and began to pursue her passion for designing
traditional leather sandals. She was taught by the master, Ali Güven, before
his death in 2010. Husna now has a team based in the historic, architecturally
unique region of Bodrum on the Turkish riviera. Here, they hand-make these
timeless, treasured and eco-friendly sandals, adapting the authentic style into
today’s fashion. 
With the milder season surrounding the
UAE, the Sapphira design (USD 530) is a suitable yet unique fashion
choice. A wide, richly comforting dark leather slip-on sandal, the lighter
hand-woven strap and laces give elegance to a very authentic Bodrum look. For a
