ICLDC Offers Vital Education Courses to Junior Doctors

HAAD-accredited MRCP study in Abu Dhabi

January 27-29 2013

The region’s junior doctors and trainee medical specialists are being offered the chance to study for the much sought-after Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) programme in January.

According to the course leader, Imperial College London’s Professor Karim Meeran, MRCP Part 1 and Part 2 will take place from January 27-29 at Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC), the state-of-the art centre for the treatment of diabetes in Abu Dhabi.
Professor Karim Meeran a specialist consultant with ICLDC

He said that the programmes provide excellent preparation for the coveted MRCP examination, and are held in partnership with UK’s Hammersmith Medicine.

“Anyone who wants to specialise has to become a member (of MRCP) by taking this exam, and it’s quite a difficult paper to pass.

“We know the standards and have considered the sort of questions that will come up and we coach doctors in a way that will make them better prepared to pass with flying colours.”

He added that as there is a need to expand this training for more doctors in the region and so it makes sense for the courses to be held in the UAE.  ICLDC has a purpose-designed lecture theatre, interaction areas and offers easy access to a number of hotels and airport.

“Indeed, due to the success of previous programmes, the courses will now be offered at least three times a year by ICLDC. Both the MRCP 1 and 2 programme are continuously reviewed by HAAD and accredited for 21.5 and 22 CME hours respectively,” he concluded.

Registration can be made online at www.icldc.co.uk or at cme@icldc.ae or Tel: + 971 2 404 0870

He however was relaxed but not celebrating! After a surprise early exit in the Mubadala World Tennis in Abu Dhabi Murray certainly looked happier in Dubai as he spent time chilling in reception and communicating on his mobile phone. After a great 2012 the grand slam winner could not have asked for a better start to 2013 than to receive the british OBE honour!

The view of the Burj Al Arab Murray would have enjoyed!

Obesity Aggravates Risks of 'Double Diabetes'

Type 1 and 2 can be found in same individual,
says expert

Abu Dhabi, UAE December 27 2012: A leading diabetes expert has warned about the compounded impact and risk of rising obesity and prevalence of type 1 diabetes in the Middle East.

In order to avoid the nightmare scenario that he calls ‘double diabetes’, Professor Paolo Pozzilli advised the medical community to understand how obesity is a leading risk factor for those genetically pre-disposed to type 1 diabetes. He warned that obesity accelerates insulin resistance and reduced insulin sensitivity, a factor that is demonstrated to drive the immune process typical in type 1 diabetes.
Leading diabetes expert Professor Paolo Pozzilli
“Obesity accelerates the process known as beta cell reduction, and is a serious hazard for type 1 diabetes leading to a new observable trait or clinical entity - the presence of type 1 and type 2 in the same individual.”

Professor Pozzilli aired his concerns as he addressed medical experts at Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) Abu Dhabi recently. Professor Pozzilli was in the capital to share his insights on recent developments in the treatment of diabetes.

“In the region, obesity is believed to have a major impact on the general population and in particular the young population. Indeed, some statistics suggest that 35 per cent of school children in the UAE are overweight or obese.”

Pozzilli is Professor of Diabetes and Clinical Research at the Centre for Diabetes at Barts and The London School of Medicine & Dentistry, London, as well as Professor of Endocrinology & Metabolic Diseases at the University Campus Bio-Medico in Rome, Italy.

He explained how the distinction between types of diabetes is blurring as more and more factors come to play and urged specialists to dig deep for diabetes treatment options.

“Type 1 diabetes should be regarded as a very non-uniform disease. Until a few a years ago you had the classification of type 1 and type 2, however now age is a factor which needs serious consideration. I think broadly there are three ages where we have to consider how the disease process is taking place: before puberty, during puberty and after puberty. And the presence of insulin resistance and other associated factors-both genetic and immunological are relevant considerations for specialists.”

He said that early diagnosis is crucial for managing diabetes of all types. “The earlier a patient is diagnosed, the as less they tend to develop long term complications associated with type 1 diabetes. Of course education is so crucial and so is compliance to therapy,” he concluded.

Andreas Kohn, Regional Director of Sales & Marketing of Yas Viceroy commented, “In addition to promoting our hotel as a luxury destination for a healthy and active lifestyle, we would also like to be recognized for our support of the Art & Culture scene in the UAE.  We are very excited about the art exhibition by artist Francesca Galliani, which artistically fuses images of our hotel and the tennis players and which will be on display in the hotel throughout the Championship.  But what we are most excited about, is donating the sales proceeds from the art pieces to the MWTC player’s charity of choice.”
Yas Viceroy will also be hosting an exclusive Cocktail Reception for the Official Sponsors of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship where they will experience an amazing opportunity to get up close and personal with the star players in an intimate, hip and fashionable setting.
