Bariatric Surgery Offers Hope to Diabetes Patients, Says Expert
·
Operation on hormones can help control
hunger and diabetes, said
Professor Karim Meeran
·
ICLDC kicks-off 2013 by leading Middle East Diabetes
Conference at Arab Health Congress
January 28-29 2013
Dubai International Convention &
Exhibition Centre, Dubai
From Middle East Diabetes Health Conference at Arab Health, Dubai
UAE January 28 2013: One of world’s leading diabetes experts said that surgery can
boost efforts to defeat diabetes.
The message was delivered to delegates at the Middle East
Diabetes Conference in Dubai by Professor Karim Meeran, Imperial College London
Diabetes Centre’s (ICLDC) Consultant Specialist and Professor of Endocrinology,
Imperial College London, who outlined how bariatric gastric bypass surgery
offers hope to many people with diabetes.
Bariatric
surgery can offer hope to
diabetes patients, said
Imperial College London
Diabetes Centre’s
Professor Karim Meeran at the
Middle East Diabetes Conference
in Dubai.
|
“Research suggests that this operation works on the hormones that
control hunger and eating, and changes in these hormones cause the person to
feel less hungry and lose weight. It offers hope to many and demand is set to
explode in the next few years.”
However Professor Meeran stressed that living a healthy and active
lifestyle is the best way for a person to avoid the need for surgery and was
cautious to explain that that the operation must only be used when appropriate.
“Surgery may have risks and side effects. We must target patients
who will benefit most from the treatment. It seems that patients who are living
with diabetes and obesity benefit more than those who are obese only.”
Specialists from Abu Dhabi’s ICLDC are leading the Middle East
Diabetes Conference in Dubai this week. The two-day event on January 28 and 29
runs alongside Arab Health 2013 and takes its place among 19 specialist
conferences accredited by HAAD for Continuous Medical Examination (CME).
Professor Meeran also said that one of the aims of the conference
is to highlight preventative measures.
“Exercise is key and it’s not just us as doctors who’re involved
in promoting such strategies, actually it is more at a public health level. It
comes with how our lives are structured, how cities are engineered and the way
our time is organised.”
According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the UAE
currently ranks 11th worldwide, with 18.9 per cent of the population
living with diabetes.
“This is an important gathering of world leading experts in
diabetes. Among other topics, we are all ready to discuss the critical
challenges facing doctors treating diabetes and its related complications, and
how we can better prepare them to manage diabetes at a regional level,”
Professor Meeran concluded.
The Middle East Diabetes Conference is one of several specialist
events from ICLDC this year. As the conference got underway a group of doctors
are also taking the coveted Membership of the Royal College of Physicians
(MRCP) parts 1 and 2 at ICLDC’s Abu Dhabi facility. This follows the European
Society of Endocrinology’s Clinical Update for more than 100 practitioners,
earlier this month.

enriching the curves of the body. The look is chic, modern and very delicate.
It’s
not just a dress or just a blouse; it’s a jewelled piece of art. It’s the
divine obsession to have the perfect dress, the urge to preserve for all
eternity in that dress. Focusing on the fusion of age-old techniques of hand
embroidery and interpreted with a very modern expression to produce
contemporary silhouettes. The fabrics for the collection are Chiffons, Nets and
Silk. Softness was the key appearance of this romantic attitude. Interlacing
with grace and strength, the natural essence of these fibres explodes in the
nobility of the fabrics.
Thai Tourism Arrivals Cross 22 Million Mark in 2012
Arrivals from UAE recorded a 4.20% growth-
hailand has achieved
record-breaking visitor arrivals, crossing the 22 million mark for the first time
in 2012. Figures tabulated by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports for January —
December 2012 show total arrivals by nationality of 22,303,065, up 15.98
percent over 2011.
Commenting
on the performance, TAT Governor Suraphon Svetasreni said, “We are overjoyed to
have achieved this result in the year the people of Thailand commemorated the
85th birthday of His Majesty the King. It is also a tribute to the
cooperation and creativity of the entire Thai travel & tourism industry for
the huge effort that has been made to ensure that travel & tourism remains
a leading industry for job creation, distribution of income nationwide and
contribution to culture, heritage and environmental preservation.”
The
governor said that the primary contributor to this result was the prevalence of
global, regional and local peace and stability. “Last year, the world was
generally at peace and there were no major geopolitical, economic,
environmental or natural disasters and no health pandemics. Travel &
tourism can only flourish worldwide if the underlying conditions that support
it remain free of disturbance and disruption. That is one of the most important
lessons for the entire industry to learn worldwide,” he said.

NLP Enables Paradigm Shift in Sales Training
New Results Comes
with New Behaviour Says Expert
Talbot
shared how NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) can have a long term substantial
impact on performance.
The
real advantage of NLP training is not in the learning,
but in how you can apply
these in an actual business
environment or situation, according to Carol Talbot.
|
“Research
indicates that almost half of the learning is lost by sales teams within five
weeks and close to 85 per cent is lost within three months. The ad-hoc training
approach and lack of reinforcement of key learning are often cited as the
reason for the poor uptake of training.
“Clearly,
the approach to sales training needs a paradigm shift that brings real changes
at the behavioural level, beyond the cosmetic changes a sales seminar or short
term training course could deliver.”
Talbot
said that NLP is a perfect tool to bridge this gap, and enable a real change in
thought process and behaviour that can be sustained, for life.
“According
to a key axiom of NLP, behaviour is the most informative indicator of the
mind's internal processing. NLP equips us to be far more astute in observing
what people do and assessing the feedback their behaviour gives us. The real
advantage of NLP training is not in the learning, but in how you can apply
these in an actual business environment or situation.”
Talking
specifically about the competitive sales environment, Talbot suggested that the
strategies of NLP enables sales professionals to get remarkable insight into
customers’ minds, their requirements and more importantly, what is driving
their needs, fears and objections.
“Once
you have mapped your customer’s mind, it is much easier to satisfy these needs,
which invariably brings more business and success in the long term.”
She
noted that the corporate world is now willing to explore the positive impact
NLP brings to diverse business situations.
“Initially
NLP training was thought of as an HR domain, however we see increasing numbers
of sales and customer service professionals coming to our NLP practitioner
programmes. This shift has come as professionals across the board are realising
how NLP could be used to enhance success and hence, revenues.
“The
tools and techniques of NLP enable you to achieve your goals much faster, be it
to build relationships or to create alignment and agreement in meetings,
running a large team or managing a diverse portfolio of clients,” she
concluded.

“I am proud to see Dubai
playing host to yet another top polo event,” message by Mohammed Al Habtoor, the Chairman of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series. “Each year the event reaches new heights. Dubai has
quickly gained popularity and found its place on the Polo world stage. In 2012
the Dubai Gold Cup Series was recognised by the World Polo Tour (WPT). We have been
privileged to attract some big names to the event year after year. Of course it
is lovely to see many familiar faces (players, officials and spectators), but
it is also great to see new faces on and off the field. This year we have upped the stakes by increasing
the handicap from 15 to 16 goals. This means the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series
(Dubai Open) is now the highest handicapped tournament in the Middle East,
Africa and Asia. A great achievement! Last year I was fortunate to lead my team
to victory.”
