DHL Named Top Company to Work For in the UAE

Great Place to Work® reveals UAE’s top 15 companies to work for in 2014


Great Place to Work® Institute UAE, part of a global research, training and consultancy firm that recognizes the best workplaces in over 50 countries worldwide, revealed its fourth annual list of the ‘Top 15 Companies to Work For in the UAE during an awards ceremony at The H Hotel in Dubai yesterday.

Scooping the top position in 2014 was previous list maker DHL. Having ranked fifth place last year, DHL put significant effort into refining its ‘employee value proposition’. Forming the cornerstone of the firm’s human capital work, the initiative outlines guidelines for developing DHL staff in terms of their growth, impact and pride. GPTW says the effect is tangible right across the organization, from DHL’s onboarding programme to the customized learning and development plans each employee receives.

Previous winner Microsoft ranked second in 2014, followed by Omnicom Media Group in third, advancing four places from its 2013 spot. Ericsson moved up two spots to claim fourth place, while THE One, the top local company, rounded out the top five.

Ranking from sixth to 10th place on the list were FedEx ExpressMarriottBaytWeber Shandwick and EMC respectively. Rounding out the final five positions on the list were Emirates TransportFun CityHyattEstee Lauder and Mondelez.

The annual benchmarking study - which assesses the level of credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie within an organization - forms part of the world’s largest employee survey. Most of a company’s score (two-thirds) is based on the confidential feedback of their staff, with an audit of management and HR practices by the Institute comprising the remainder of the score.

According to GPTW UAE, the competition this year was the stiffest it has seen. “We have seen a lot of movement this year in terms of where companies have ranked on the list, but overall their people practices are far more integrated and aligned than in previous years. We are really pleased to see the top companies put into practice the findings from their previous analysis reports, which is translating into excellent Trust Index scores. This is without a doubt the strongest level of competition we have seen since launching the Top Companies program in 2010. Congratulations to all the Top 15 list makers. This is a result of which you should feel very proud,” said David Robert, Chief Executive of GPTW Gulf.

Our global proprietary trust measurement tool (the Trust Index®) shows the UAE now ranks near the top globally scoring 83%. The Top 15 Companies to Work for in the UAE for 2014 were represented by a wide cross section of sectors including logistics, technology, media, retail, hospitality and manufacturing. New listmakers in 2014 included Weber Shandwick, Emirates Transport, Fun City, Hyatt and Estee Lauder.

“With human resource development a core focus of the UAE’s economic strategy, we hope more businesses will see value in adopting the Top Companies program as a measure of best practice,” added Robert.

Expatriate employees are provided with a book called “Don’t they know its Friday” which is a resident’s guide and a Dubai Map explaining some of the differences with living in the Middle East.
