Montegrappa launches writing competition to celebrate
the beautiful game and its king Pelé

Long before Maradona, David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Ronaldo or Messi laid claims to the crown of the beautiful game, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, the man who became known the world over as Pelé, was the one footballer every kid wanted to be like. His pace and skills were mesmerising, his spectacular goals made him a legend around the world, and the most influential ambassador the game of football could wish for.
With the World Cup fast approaching, Montegrappa, Italy's oldest manufacturer of luxury writing instruments, marks this momentous occasion with the launch of a ‘Write to Pelé’ competition, www.writetopele.com, running May 1 – June 30, 2014,

which aims to enthuse the region’s long-standing football and Pele fans, as well as connect one lucky winner to Pelé himself.
“At Montegrappa we are passionate about extraordinary stories and legends, which have always been part of the fabric of our brand. So, it is a joy to celebrate the tradition of storytelling, Pelé and the game of football which brings cultures and people together, through the limited edition Montegrappa ‘Icons’ Pelé pen series. We are also genuinely excited by the prospect of connecting football and Pelé fans to their idol,” said Mr Giuseppe Aquila, CEO of Montegrappa Italia.
Two designs have been created for the Pelé Icons Pen Limited Edition. The Heritage is offered in models with solid gold or solid silver trim. The cap features the Brazilian flag and its top is shaped like a football, atop a crown that reads ‘All Hail The King’. Pelé’s signature and the dates of 1958-1962-1970 (the years Pelé won his three FIFA World CupsTM) are etched at the nib’s ends.  The Heritage solid silver trim edition consists of 1283 fountain pens and 1283 rollerball pens representing the number of goals scored in his entire career, while the gold edition is limited to 10 fountain pens and 10 roller balls, signifying his jersey number.
Made of black resin, the P10 Edition features silver trims, with the top inspired by the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, the colours of Brazil filled in with enamel. The P10’s clip is a sceptre, to represent ‘The King of Football’, with a miniature football containing a sapphire at its top. The legend, ‘The King of Football’, is engraved around cap, with Pelé’s signature on the side of the cap in white. The P10 is available in 1940 pieces, a mix of fountain pens, rollerballs and ballpoints, representing the year of Pelé’s birth. The P-10 edition is also offered in an exclusive version consisting of 10 fountain pens and 10 rollerballs with solid 18K gold trim.
Pelé’s career achievements and recognitions are simply unequalled: 1281 goals in 1363 games (he holds the Guinness World Record for the most successful league goal scorer); 541 league goals, winner of three FIFA World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970); two Copa Libertadores (1962, 1963) with his club Santos; World Player of the Century (1999); Football Player of the Century (1999, by Ballon D'Or winners); Athlete of the Century (1999, IOC), FIFA Ballon d'Or Prix d'Honneur (2013).
But, it’s not just his football skills that made him a global icon.  Pelé, like all heroes and legends, has a storied history. When he got injured in the 1966 World Cup, fans all over the world cried for him. When he won the final of the 1970 World Cup everybody rejoiced with him. When he visited Nigeria during its violent civil war (1967 – 1970) the opposing parties called for a two-day truce, so that the country could witness Pelé’s football wizardry.
Naturally, all Pelé fans know of these and many more triumphs and extraordinary events he was part of. And now, they have the unique chance to connect with their idol, write to him and receive a letter from Pelé himself!
