Fiji has long since been renown as one of the high-fliers of Sevens rugby. But coach Ben Ryan, and three of his players, really have been flying high in Dubai!
Ben, skipper Osea Kolonisau, Jonah Tuitoga, and Benito Masilevu were invited to take a Seawings tour of Dubai, with fantastic aeriel views of the picturesque skyline in the comfort of a seaplane.
“It was a fantastic experience, and we thoroughly enjoyed it,” said Ben. “We really appreciated the invitation, and Dubai looked beautiful from our cabin.”
Now Ben and his team will be hoping to be high-flying again, this time metaphorically, when they take part in round two of the HSBC Sevens World Series at this week’s Emirates Dubai Rugby Sevens.
The Fijians believe they are due a win in Dubai, having been runners up five times since it became an IRB World Series venue in 1999. But to do it this year, they have to first negotiate England, Canada and the USA in Pool C on Friday.
“Fiji not winning at World Series event is something my players are desperate to put right,” said Ben. “We’ve worked really hard since the first round on the Gold Coast last month, and we’re all looking forward to this weekend.”
