Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the popular martial whose real origins remain somewhat of a mystery for the most part, has its roots steeped in Brazilian and Japanese history. It is said to have originated in 1882, and is a morph of its parent styles of Judo and Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Particularly renowned for its intense grappling and submission techniques, it is also immensely popular for aspects of physical fitness, but more so as a way of life.
Jiu-Jitsu was first introduced to the UAE in the late 1990s by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed, who is affectionately referred to by athletes as the “Godfather of UAE Jiu-Jitsu”. The sport has since gained tremendous popularity in the UAE, with many training centers cropping up all over the Nation in recent times, particularly in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Since
2008, various schools have inculcated the School Jiu-Jitsu (SJJ) Programme as part of its curriculum, as an initiative of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. The programme is primarily aimed at instilling self-defense values in children aged 9 to 12, and to possibly mold future champions taking part in international tournaments.
