More than 150 football players will take to the pitch at Zayed Sports City to compete for the 2013 ZSC Cup, which is supported by the Higher Education Sports Federation and Wilson.
In its third season, the Cup will pit 16 teams against each other to see who will be crowned this year's champion. The teams will come from a variety of corporate sectors, including finance, Government, engineering, and leisure, as well as social groups. The matches utilise a seven-a-side format with 40-minute games ensuring a quick pace of play.2012 winners, Falcon’s Academy, will be hoping to retain the title for a second consecutive year, but face stiff competition from the teams who finished top of the Abu Dhabi Football League - the Higher Education and Zayed Sports City squads.
The tournament has a hefty prize pot of AED 30,000 that will be divvyed up between the winners. It includes AED15,000 for the overall champions, AED10,000 for the first runner-up and AED5,000 for the third placed team. It will also name the “Man of the Match” each game - awarded to a player who showed great skill, commitment and leadership throughout the evening.
Barry Bremner, General Manager of Zayed Sports City, comments: “This is the third season of the ZSC Cup, which is one of the most popular events within our annual community calendar.
“The event has seen the standard of play and level of competition increase each year and we anticipate some exciting and challenging matches. Many of the teams participating compete in a number of leagues throughout the year and given the mix of team pride and prize money to be won, many players have been training hard to ensure they are on the winning team.”
Bremner added: “Grass roots events such as this are an important feeder for football at a professional level and require a significant level of support from both ZSC and our partners such as the Higher Education Sports Federation and Wilson, who are supporters of the ZSC Cup.”
Mazim Fahmawi, captain of last year’s winner, Falcons Academy, said: “We are excited to again play in the ZSC Cup and look forward to the tournament. The competition is fierce and our team will try our best to win again. The squad has been practicing and we hope to impress on the pitch during the tournament.”
Matches take place on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9pm to 11pm on pitch 11. Family, friends and football fans wanting to come down and show their support can do so for free for the duration of the Cup. The tournament will conclude on June 4.
The ZSC Cup is supported by Wilson and the Higher Education Sports Federation and is organised by Zayed Sports City.
