“The Big Heart Campaign” responds to Syrian refugee children’s appeal


In response to the humanitarian appeal launched by UNHCR seeking to support one million Syrian children forced to flee their homeland as refugees, The Big Heart Campaign for Syrian Refugee Children under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher AlQasimi (wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and UNHCR Eminent Advocate for Refugee children) has donated US$ 200.000 to provide Syrians Refugee Children with life-saving humanitarian assistance, and relieve them from their hardships In light of the gap in the funding required by the Syria Regional Response Plan, as it has been funded only 38% of the required amount.

The intuitive comes as the Syrian crisis deteriorating on an hourly basis. The number of Syrian refugees who have been registered or are pending registration with the UNHCR is now approximately 1,916,387 Syrians, whom have fled to neighboring countries: Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt. Half of the refugees from the Syria conflict are children, and more than 740,000 of them are under than age of 11. Moreover, more than 2 million children have been internally displaced within Syria.

Commenting on the refugees’ plight, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, UNHCR Eminent Advocate for Refugee Children said: “we are currently facing one of the worst humanitarian crises due to the conflict in Syria. The Syrian crisis has left almost 2 million homeless. Now with the Syria’s war well into its third year, more poverty, deprivation and despair can be seen”.

“One million Syrian children became homeless, we don’t know how long they will be refugees for, but we would like to reassure them that there are many who would like to extend a helping hand. They may not know their names; But they are ready to help their Syrian refugee brothers and sisters. ” She added.

Amin Awad, Director of Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Regional Coordinator of UNHCR appreciate the donation made by Her Highness Sheikha Jawahir and said: “ We are very grateful to Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher, UNHCR’s Eminent Advocate, for launching the Big Heart campaign for Syrian refugee children. This campaign will surely portray a smile on the children’s faces and will contribute to relieving some of their pain”.

Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi appealed to individuals and institutions in UAE society and the Arab world to alleviate the suffering of Syrian refugee children, and provide them with life-saving humanitarian assistance including food, shelter, healthcare and education. “We need to take a serious stand and act quickly to come to their aid and to keep hope alive in children’s hearts” HH Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi said.

It's worth mentioning that this contribution comes within a series of Initiatives and activities conducted by the Big Heart Campaign to alleviate the suffering of Syrian children , and follows the Eidya of US$1.8 million sent to 12000 Syrian families in Jordan.

Donors can make life-saving contributions to the ‘Big Heart for Syrian Refugee Children’ campaign. Funds are collected through ‘Salam Ya Seghar’, endorsed by HH Sheikha Jawaher.

Sharjah is booming: Sahara Centre reports 75 percent increase in sales during Ramadan


  • The biggest mall in Sharjah welcomed 45 percent more visitors during Ramadan this year
  • Compared to 2012, there were 25 percent more visitors during Eid holidays

Sahara Centre, the leading family and shopping destination in Sharjah, has reported a phenomenal increase in footfall and sales during the holy month of Ramadan. Reflecting Sharjah’s economic growth, shoppers looking to celebrate Ramadan with family and friends took to the new and improved mall, resulting in a 75 percent increase in sales during Ramadan, with 45 percent more visitors during the month. Year-on-year, there were 25 percent more visitors during the three days of Eid. This isn’t just a seasonal trend; the mall has grown from strength to strength since its ambitious expansion, with an overall 70 percent increase in sales.
Sahara Centre also held various high-profile initiatives which have proven to be crowd pullers this year. For instance, 14-year-old Leen Osama Sami Mustafa won a brand new Range Rover Evoque as part of the Ramadan Prize Draw. This was the first of two prizes to be won; the second prize draw took place on 25th August 2013. Among other attractions at Sahara Centre during Eid, the Ayala Band’s traditional dance and music, as well as performances by popular singer Moutasem Al Asali were big hits with mall-goers.          

A Sharjah shopping destination
Sahara Centre is strategically located on the Dubai-Sharjah highway and first opened its doors to customers in February 2002. This year the mall upgraded facilities and added new stores as part of the shopping mall’s extension.

“The mall has grown in popularity as the preferred destination for shoppers in Sharjah, who used to previously make the long trek to Dubai during weekends,” says Akram Ammar, Sahara Centre’s managing director. He continues, “With more than 100 new places to shop including Zara, Iconic, Matalan, Emax, Baby Shop; prominent brands including Mango, Lacoste, Steve Madden, Tommy Hilfiger, Sunglass Hut, Swarovski, Promod, Bershka, Pull and Bear, Rodeo Drive, Ferre, among others; 51 food outlets and a wide-range of new international restaurants including Chopsticks, Bennigans, Vapiano, Applebee’s, Russo's New York pizzeria, and Paul, there isn’t any need to leave Sharjah.”
Malak Haydar is a regular customer at Sahara Centre and agrees that the home-grown attractions render a trip to Dubai unnecessary, “These days I don’t feel the need to go anywhere else. I have the best options right next door, and with the expansion there are so many more shops and a bigger parking lot, so why should I go through the added stress of driving for miles and then fighting to find place to park my car. I save on fuel, Salik and my family prefers it here as well because the kids love the Adventureland and cinema.”

Keeping pace with Sharjah’s growth
Sahara Centre’s rapid increase in footfall matches the growth predictions for the third largest emirate in the UAE. Tawasul @tawasulfund urgently appeals for more contributions to drastically increase orphans’ university funding by 1500% from 2 to 30 beneficiaries

As the countdown to the end of Tawasul’s online art auction gathers pace, the charity has appealed for more art lovers and philanthropists to get involved and boost its quest to benefit as many orphans as possible. The auction has so far raised about AED 630,000, but this will only cover university studies for two orphans - as opposed to the 30 orphans which organizers are targeting to sponsor.

The famous artists whose masterpieces are part of the online auction include Fadi Yazigi, the 47-year-old Syrian master who has captivated bidders with his depictions of ordinary people as underdeveloped creatures and half-human beasts. His innovative techniques range from bronze casting to direct painting on furniture to stunning newspaper art, a

nd some of his mesmerizing art is still up for auction. 

Jasmin Ruehling, Program Executive at Sharjah Business Women Council for the Tawasul Online Charity Auction, elaborated: “While we express our heartfelt gratitude for those whose generosity has raised over US$170,000, the unfortunate reality is that university studies are highly cost-intensive and time-intensive, hence current funds are only sufficient to sponsor two orphans. Given that we have so many academically gifted orphans, it would be a heartbreaking tragedy and travesty if the other ambitious youths were denied their right to rise above their under-privileged backgrounds through education.”

Participation in the online auction will give art lovers a front-row opportunity to bid for the remaining 17 artworks from 26 of the Arab world’s most celebrated and emerging artists hailing from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Syria, Palestine, Oman, Kuwait and Jordan.

As the brainchild of the Sharjah-based Tawasul Orphans Education Fund, the auction is held under the generous patronage of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs and Patron of Sharjah Business Women Council.

Ms Ruehling added: “These are so much more than just donations; these are investments in tomorrow’s leaders. We have always passionately believed in sustainable contributions that help orphans to help themselves, and there is no better way than tertiary education to empower tomorrow’s visionaries in all fields. This is a perfect win-win scenario for both the orphans and participants, who will benefit from precious artworks in diverse fields encompassing sculpture, painting, photography, graphic and video art, among others.”
