Dubai
is fast becoming one of the busiest educational hubs in the GCC. It offers
ambitious students from both inside and outside the region access to some of
the best higher education from around the world.
The
number of students aiming for higher education in Dubai has increased
remarkably, to a great extent this is due to the presence of international
university campuses in the UAE. Yet very often the basic requirement needed to
enroll in university, such as proficiency in or even familiarity with, the
English language, may seem insurmountable for some. This is exactly the reason
why International House (IH) opened one of its wings in Dubai; to provide help,
support and training in the English language and instill writing, reading,
speaking and listening skills to those who wish to master this global language.
As
educational prospects improve and students set more ambitious career goals,
proficiency in spoken and written English is assuming greater importance.
Taking this into account, exams conducted by IH Dubai, produced by Cambridge
English Language Assessment (Part of the University of Cambridge) aim to build
a strong foundation for a successful future career.
General
English exams such as: the Cambridge English: Key (KET), Cambridge English:
Preliminary (PET), Cambridge English: First (FCE) and the Cambridge English:
Advanced (CAE), are available for learners of all levels.
Zara Shahid Khan, Marketing
Manager, Cambridge English Language Assessment says, “Cambridge English
Language Assessment are the experts in language assessment delivering
excellence and innovation enabling learners across the world to help them
achieve their life goals and have a positive impact on their learning and
professional development experience.”“We have seen a huge uptake for our qualifications in the UAE especially within the school sector enabling teachers and principals to collect and monitor data on students’ performance in English language against international standards, at the same time preparing them for university and beyond,” she also added.
Nearly
300 students have enrolled with IH Dubai for both KET and PET exams from the
Vocational Education Development Centre (VEDC), Cambridge International School
and Raffles International School. Students taking these exams typically fall in
the age group of 16 to 24; and understand the importance of English in their
everyday life.
Highlighting
the successes of individuals taking the exams with IH Dubai, Director Clair
Hattle says, “It’s fantastic seeing such awareness of the need for competence
in the English language for work and study, and the fact that the UAE is taking
clear steps towards supporting students to achieve the skills necessary. This
is happening both in the increased recognition from the workplace which has
seen thousands of companies recognizing these exams as the benchmark required
for recruitment, and also at the grassroots level where schools are providing a
clear progression path for students to develop their language competencies from
a young age. These students do far better in high-stakes exams in later life
and are better prepared for what they will encounter in higher education or
work.”
