MEMENTO VERDI Montegrappa @Montegrappa1912 marks Giuseppe Verdi bicentennial with a limited edition pen series

MEMENTO VERDI
Montegrappa marks Giuseppe Verdi bicentennial
with a limited edition pen series

As Italy and the world all over celebrate this year Giuseppe Verdi’s bicentennial, Montegrappa, Italy's oldest manufacturer of luxury writing instruments, have marked this momentous occasion with a limited edition pen collection.

The ‘Bicentenario di Giuseppe Verdi’ collection is a result of a close collaboration between Montegrappa, Giuseppe Verdi Foundation, the estemeed Superintendence of Teatro Regio in Parma and renowned Italian designer Maurizio Cavazzuti, and represents the apogee of craftsmanship, artistry and passion, paying homage to Verdi on his 200th birthday, and his exquisite operas.

“True beauty is recognizable in every language and land, and Giuseppe Verdi moved the world with his music, which is still ingrained in our popular culture today,” said Montegrappa CEO Giuseppe Aquila.

The musical genius of Verdi has endured time and his works - Rigoletto, Nabucco and Aida - have been the mainstay of opera companies worldwide for over a century, reaffirming his status as an operatic titan and one of the finest dramatists in history.

Much like Verdi’s operas, Montegrappa’s commemorative collection of writing instruments is also a thing of beauty!

Let’s take a closer look. Each pen is turned from rods of black resin and is highlighted with rhodium plated trim. The cap is laser engraved with a portion of Giuseppe Verdi’s face on one side and his signature on the other.  The cap’s band features the anniversary date (1813-2013) on the front and the wording ‘Bicentenario’ at the back; Montegrappa’s logo, which is surrounded by the Italian ‘tricolore’ (flag); and the logo of the Teatro Regio di Parma which decorates the grip section of the pen. The fountain pen is fitted with a cartridge filling system and a rhodium plated 18K gold nib.
The number of pens crafted for this special Montegrappa limited edition is 1,813 (the number is the year of Verdi’s birth) of which 350 fountain pens, 650 roller balls and 813 twist-action ballpoint pens, and are priced from AED 2,165.

Paying tribute to Verdi’s much-loved operas is Montegrappa “Emozioni in Musica” collection which honours La Traviata, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Il Rigoletto, the latter to be launched this October.

The design of Il Rigoletto pen immediately recalls the attire of the traditional court jester, a harlequin pattern of red, along white and black diamond shapes. The body and the all-red cap are made of resin, with a mosaic effect. All trims are made of solid silver or solid gold, according to the model. The handmade black and red glass ‘murrina’ on top of the red cap was inspired by the puffy sleeves and pantaloons of a harlequin’s garb, while the pocket clip is styled in the manner of the jester’s footwear. For the ring encircling the body, Montegrappa’s artisans have etched a pattern to denote the type of belt worn by a jester.

Montegrappa’s Rigoletto limited edition consists of 1851 pens(the number is the year Il Rigoletto made its debut): 900 fountain pens and 900 rollerballs with sterling silver trim, 30 fountain pens and 21 roller balls with solid 18K gold trim.

Priced from AED 12,260, Il Rigoletto pens are launched in Dubai by the CEO of Montegrappa Italia Mr. Giuseppe Aquila in the presence of noted celebrities and VIP guests, on the 10th of October 2013, at a special operatic concert, with gala dinner, held at Raffles Hotel Ballroom to celebrate the bicentenary of Verdi’s birth.

Like all Montegrappa limited edition series, the Giuseppe Verdi and Il Rigoletto pens are presented in a regal box, perfectly suited to house the opulent writing instrument.

AL GHURAIR CENTRE’S @GhurairCentre MALL EXPANSION OPENING TOMORROW

Deira-based mall to add hundreds of new retail outlets and introduce vibrant street culture scene
DUBAI // Al Ghurair Centre, Dubai’s original shopping mall, will open its highly anticipated retail expansion tomorrow, a key part of its AED 2 billion overhaul.
Featuring over 130 new stores, the mall will now offer more than 850,000 square feet of retail, food and beverage and entertainment across 350 outlets.
The expansion is certain to raise the competition for shoppers and tourists in Deira, offering a wide range of international retail concepts.
Key retail brands such as Marks & Spencer, Mango, Iconic, Omega, Cortefiel and Aeropostale are joined by newcomers to the market such as George, Crazy 8, Calzedonia and I Am.
David Thurling, Vice President Malls for Al Ghurair Properties, said: “The new retail offering appeals to a broad customer base being primarily mid- to upper-mid income consumers.
“Our goal was to create a spectacular yet comfortable shopping environment for our customers. The sense of space and light will provide them with a wonderful ambience in which to shop, dine and catch up with friends.”
Central to the expansion opening is a complete re-packaging of the mall’s branding.
“We feel our brand belongs to our community. Our mall, being an urban downtown property, has a unique place in this city,” Mr Thurling said.
“Al Ghurair Centre is as much an outward facing shopping destination as it is inward facing.  Unlike almost every major mall in Dubai, we connect directly to the people who live in our community.  Our external sidewalks and tree-lined streets are a part of the Al Ghurair Centre experience, just as the wonderful new interiors.”
Al Ghurair Centre is planning to conduct a marketing strategy in which it will move away from the traditional seasonal promotions so common in other malls.
“We intend to create a very special district in and around our mall that will come alive throughout the entire year as a place for street theatre, art and music,” said Mr Thurling.
“In many ways, the centre will build on the inherent vibrancy of the surrounding streets to create a bustling experience similar to places like Greenwich Village in New York or Covent Garden in London.
“Over time we firmly believe that Al Ghurair Centre will become a centerpiece tourist attraction famous for its street festivals, public art pieces and ongoing community driven activities.”
The new expansion also features an 18 outlet international food court, Sparky’s a Family Entertainment Centre featuring an ice rink, indoor rollercoaster and other rides.
Two impressive atriums rising over the three levels of the mall provide customers with natural light and striking open spaces.
Unique to the mall are two indoor fountains that feature an array of choreographed effects, including a jet of water that shoots up almost 30 metres to the underside of the mall’s glass atrium roof.
The Al Ghurair Centre will kick off the new opening with three months of international and local entertainment and activities.
This will include appearances by renowned Colombian urban circus troupe Circolombia, British magician James More, and from the USA, the Voca People, who will perform musical hits with just their voices.

In addition to this, visitors can enjoy all-day roaming street theatre performances appearing in eight different zones in and around the mall.

@shjbabyfriendly Massive boost for hundreds of children as Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign launches ‘Salamaty’ program with Alkounouz

Massive boost for hundreds of children as Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign launches ‘Salamaty’ program with Alkounouz

In a partnership that will yield substantial benefits for over 130 children currently enrolled and many more children in upcoming phases, the Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign (SBFEC) has entered a collaboration with Alkounouz Kindergarten to launch a program called ‘Salamaty’, which will greatly increase the awareness of breastfeeding benefits and practices among mothers and kindergarten staff. This comes after observations that breastfed children at the kindergarten enjoyed higher levels of physical and developmental progress than non-breastfed children. The launch ceremony was attended by representatives from the Motherhood and Childhood Center and Sharjah Educational Zone, along with numerous mothers and staff members.

Expressing her optimism for the program’s future success, Dr Hessa Khalfan Al Ghazal, Director of the Executive Committee of the Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign said: “For mothers and staff at Alkounouz Kindergarten, the benefits of breastfeeding are no longer just a scientific theory but an everyday reality. Each day across Sharjah’s kindergartens there is mounting first-hand evidence of how breastfed children tend to enjoy a superior level of physical, intellectual and emotional development compared to their non-breastfed counterparts. Therefore ‘Salamaty’ will ensure that these benefits do not end with the current stream of children but extend to future intakes, thus helping hundreds and potentially thousands of children in future.”

Dr Al Ghazal added: “We are absolutely delighted to be collaborating with Alkounouz Kindergarten, and their enthusiasm makes us eagerly look forward to future collaborations. Our partnership is proof that nothing is impossible in Sharjah if we think beyond the ordinary and dare to aim for the extraordinary.”

Ameena Al Johari Alkounouz Kindergarten Manager elaborated: “’Salamaty’ would not have been possible without the wonderful support and unwavering hard work of the Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign. The biggest lesson we have learned from the SBFEC is to look at the big picture, so that we don’t just see the children but rather how all the pieces of the community puzzle fit together.”

She continued: “Although the importance of breastfeeding is widely accepted, not all members of society have an in-depth grasp of its medical, psychological or social benefits. Therefore the ‘Salamaty’ program will set off the chain reaction of awareness.”

‘Salamaty’ will initially be implemented among the 130 children at the kindergarten, before being expanded to benefit hundreds and potentially thousands of children and their mothers. Meanwhile attendees at the launch praised the clear and engaging way with which the campaign enlightened mothers.

The Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign was initiated in March 2012 under the generous patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Budoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), President of the Campaign and Honorary President of the Breastfeeding Friends Association. The campaign encompasses four initiatives: Breastfeeding-Friendly Nurseries, Mother and Baby-Friendly Public Places, Mother-Friendly Workplaces and Baby-Friendly Health Facilities. The campaign is sponsored by Sharjah Islamic Bank.
