Aspiring
novelists still have time to enter the
2014 Montegrappa First Fiction Competition, which has already put two previous
entrants on the road to becoming published authors. Organisers of the Emirates
Airline Festival of Literature have confirmed that the deadline for entries is
January 11, 2014. The competition, which is open exclusively for adults, gives
new writers the chance to have their work reviewed by leading UK literary agent
Luigi Bonomi. The winner is also flown to the London Book Fair and is awarded a
Montegrappa pen and the Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook.
Luigi Bonomi, who judges the competition said, “In 2013, Rachel Hamilton
was an aspiring fan. She turned up at the Festival to meet her favourite
authors but also to take part in the Montegrappa First Fiction Competition and
she became one of its winners. As a result, she went on to get a
book-publishing contract with Simon & Schuster and will now become an
author in her own right. In 2014, we are running that competition again and so
you, aspiring authors, will once more get the chance to possibly become an author
in your own right.”
Annabel Kantaria, who
won the 2013 competition with her romantic mystery ‘The Marmalade Murders’
said, “Winning the Montegrappa First Fiction Competition was a dream come true
for me. Hearing Luigi Bonomi say he liked my writing was a huge
confidence boost and the advice he's given me since has been invaluable.”
Rachel Hamilton, who
came second in the competition, went on to secure a two-book deal with Simon
& Schuster and will be appearing at the 2014 Festival as an author.
“I can truthfully say
that entering the Montegrappa First Fiction Competition can help you live
happily ever after! Within a month of coming second in the competition, I was
offered representation by the wonderful literary agent Luigi Bonomi, and a few
weeks later, I had a book deal,” said Hamilton. “My first children's book, 'The
Case of the Exploding Loo', will be out in August 2014 and I couldn't be more
delighted. I will always be grateful to the Emirates Airline Festival of
Literature for the opportunity they gave me,” Hamilton concluded.
To enter the Montegrappa
First Fiction competition, unpublished writers over the age of 21 must send a
400-word synopsis and the first 2000 words of their fiction manuscript for
consideration via the LitFest website - http://www.emirateslitfest.com/First-Fiction-2014.
Luigi Bonomi is one of
the UK’s top literary agents and has launched the careers of many bestselling
authors. He is the founder of Luigi Bonomi Associates (LBA), which represents a
variety of authors, journalists and writers, including John Humphrys, Esther
Rantzen and Alan Titchmarsh. In addition to his day job, he is Honorary
Professor of Creative Writing at Aberystwyth University and Literary Consultant
for the Sunday Times Oxford University Literary Festival. In 2010 he won the
Bookseller Industry Award for Literary Agent of the Year.
