Abu Dhabi, UAE November 2012: A bumper crowd of more than seventeen thousand joined Walk 2012 to
pace the F1 track at Yas Marina Circuit calling attention to the crucial role
of regular exercise for a healthy lifestyle, and a healthy nation (November 16
2012).
Under the patronage of
Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, organised in the capital by the
Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) with the support of the
National Health Insurance Company – Daman, this year’s
annual event took place just two days after World Diabetes Day and the news
that diabetes continues to be a challenge, up by 5 million recorded cases
worldwide in twelve months.
The International Diabetes Federation’s Diabetes
Atlas 2012 confirms that more than 371m people are living with diabetes, up
from 366m in December last year.
In the UAE, diabetes is recorded in around 19 per
cent of the population, and it is possible that at least half the number again
is undiagnosed. Globally, it is thought that 187m people have not yet
recognised the symptoms.
The good news offer at
Walk 2012 is that a 30-minute brisk walk taken every day in combination with a
balance diet is all it takes to adopt a healthy lifestyle that can help prevent
diabetes and its related complications.
