The Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens is the best sevens tournament in the world, according to Gordon Tietjens.
The legendary sevens coach will return to Dubai for the three day tournament at the end of this month with Series Champions New Zealand and he admits that the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens is something special.
“Dubai is my favourite tournament out of all of them,” he admitted. “It’s a great tournament to win.
“The facilities are first-rate and the support that Emirates Airline gives us is just fantastic. I have met a lot of people over the years in Dubai who now are very good friends.”
Over 200 teams from all over the world will battle it out across six pitches in front of almost 100,000 spectators at the year’s Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens this year.

It is the special atmosphere cultivated by the mixture of the top men’s and women’s teams in the world and the Invitation tournament that Tietjens believes is what makes Dubai such a unique place.
“The rugby at an international level is the highest it can be and sevens rugby has become a lot stronger in the second fields over the past three or four years. It has made it more interesting and the number of supporters has grown significantly and I believe that the support of the spectators in Dubai is one of the main reasons behind that.
“I can remember back to when they were playing in the sand. The tournament has just grown and grown. It is a very special place,” he said Since the HSBC Sevens World Series was first adopted into the IRB calendar in 1999/2000, New Zealand has lifted the trophy five times, more than any other team. But Tietjens is more aware than anyone that they have not been on the winners’ podium for two years and pooled with Wales, Argentina and Russia, he is not taking anything for granted.
“Wales are the current World Champions in terms of winning the World Cup. Argentina are also very tough on their day and I have seen Russia draw with Fiji.
“There are six or seven teams that could win it. The English have won over the past couple of years, but it’s a climate we like playing in and a tournament we want to win again,” he said.
